Inspiration from PlaybackSchools

If you are looking for that spark of inspiration, or for more great ways to engage your students, PlaybackSchools is a new service from the National STEM Centre which gives you free access to the 3500 videos produced by Teachers TV. I’ve chosen a selection of the most popular primary and secondary videos in the archive.

Inspirations is a series of 90 short films highlighting exciting projects and ideas that have made a dramatic difference in classrooms across the country. Take a look at how Simon Pugh-Jones, Head of Physics at The Writhlington School, has transformed an after school greenhouse club into a rare orchid business to rival any professional growers. Students across Years 7 to 13 are now carrying out high quality research, working with established professionals and benefitting from strong links with Kew, The Eden Project, Brazil, Costa Rica and India. Meanwhile, Andy Smith’s Passion for Physics is infectious as he uses a host of interactive strategies, practical demonstrations, quizzes, videos, games and role play to grab his students’ attention.

If you are looking for great lesson ideas , how about a creative KS2 project using music and dance to teach anatomy and tessellation? Or see how a physicist, a botanist, and a musician combine science, engineering and broccoli trumpets in Science Gets Fruity!

And finally, to capture the attention and imagination of your students, Matthew Tosh presents the History of Maths, looking at where numbers came from and questioning mathematical concepts.

To receive a weekly update recommending a popular Teachers TV video together with a related, high quality classroom resource from the eLibrary, you can subscribe to our PlaybackSchools (Teachers TV Archive) newsletter. To do this just register with the National STEM Centre and tick the PlaybackSchools box, if you are already registered then sign in and click 'edit profile' and select the PlaybackSchools tickbox at the bottom of the page.

I WOULD LIKE TO FIND OUT HOW TO SEARCH THE PLAYBACK SCHOOLS COLLECTION OF VIDEOS FOR MATHEMATICS VIDEOS. IS THERE A LINK TO A SITE WHICH ALLOWS ME TO DO THIS?

Hi Pamela,

The PlaybackSchools' website has a search which is designed to be simple to use and offer you a good range of results. You can look for resources by either browsing complete series, or searching using particular key words.
You can also refine your PlaybackSchools search by using the filter options on the left-hand side of the page, so you can search for maths videos this way. There is a search box on the homepage of the website:
http://www.playbackschools.org.uk/
During 2012 we are also transfering the STEM related Teachers TV videos to the National STEM Centre eLibrary.
I hope this helps,
Karen Hornby
