Powering our future with weather, climate and water

The theme for this year’s World Meteorological Day is “Powering our future with weather, climate and water”. The Gross Domestic Product of America can vary by billions of dollars per year due to the impacts of climate and weather conditions. Early warning systems can save governments money but more importantly they also save lives.

Much of our information on weather changes come from satellites and, over the past 30 years, they have revolutionised our knowledge of the Earth’s climate. I’ve put together a list on the National STEM Centre eLibrary for World Meteorological Day which includes information and practical activities for primary and secondary students. You will need to log in or quickly register to view this list.

There are also useful resources on the Future Morph website where BBC weather forecaster Chris Fawkes talks about modelling the atmosphere and comparing this with human readings. To link with this there is a lesson plan for students to test their knowledge of isobars and then investigate how a barometer works.
