Resources and gadgets for ‘No Smoking Day’

No Smoking Day takes place on Wednesday 14 March 2012. On the day more than a million smokers are expected to make a quit attempt.

Since the first No Smoking Day in 1984 many schools across the UK have taken part in the campaign. No Smoking Day is an ideal time to remind pupils, staff and parents of the huge risks of taking up smoking and of the help and support available for quitters. This year's striking theme Take the Leap aims to urge smokers to put their health first by placing emphasis on the energy they may gain from giving up.

The No Smoking Day website contains a variety of free resources to download including:

The National STEM Centre in York has a large collection of gadgets and gizmos on show for teachers to look at, play with and understand how they could utilise these in lessons. One of our more popular physical resources is the Giant Cigarette Model.

This model provides a striking demonstration of the dangers of cigarette smoke. Instead of smoke, a banner comes out of this cigarette, showing poisonous and cancer-causing chemicals contained in cigarette smoke. The banner may also be hung on a wall.

If you would like to come and visit the centre please contact enquiries@nationalstemcentre.org.uk or telephone 01904 328377.

We look forward to meeting you.

Although I love the idea of no smoking day, it is quite a debate if it actually has any help. If I had the power I would try and avoid the subject completely, and put smoking with that subject that should never be advertised. Many people believe that any publicity is good publicity, so is this the same for the cigeratte seller?
