'Space for education; education for space' – ESERO-UK Editorial in ASE’s School Science Review

Over the last two years I have been extremely fortunate to be manager of ESERO-UK, the UK arm of the European Space Education Resource Office (ESERO). I have enjoyed being the Special Issue Editor for the March 2012 edition of ASE’s School Science Review (SSR).

The theme of this editorial issue is to inform teachers about using space to enrich the teaching and learning of STEM subjects and I have persuaded the ESERO Space Ambassadors and some of their colleagues to contribute articles that I think you will find really interesting. All of the articles demonstrate ways in which teachers can utilise the subject of space as a context for the teaching and learning of science, technology, engineering and maths.

So as well as my editorial you will then be able to read about the following:

  • The James Webb Space Telescope: inspiration and context for physics and chemistry teaching (Dan Hillier, Tania Johnston and John Davies)
  • The Space Academy: going beyond ‘inspiration’ – a pioneering model for science education (Anu Ojha and Sarah Hill)
  • Using space as a context for teaching science (Mark Smith)
  • An introduction to ESERO-UK, the UK Space Education Office (Allan Clements and Edward Mather)
  • Resources for teaching astronomy in UK schools (Paul Roche, Andy Newsam, Sarah Roberts, Tom Mason and John Baruch)
  • Teaching astronomy in UK schools (Paul Roche, Sarah Roberts, Andy Newsam and Charles Barclay)
  • The sky’s the limit! Introducing GCSE Astronomy at Glyncoed Comprehensive School (Jennifer Jeffes)
  • Weightless materials science (Jeremy Curtis)

I’m really excited about the impact that the articles will have and for those of you who already receive SSR from ASE I hope you find the information useful. Should you not subscribe to SSR then I’m sure ASE would welcome you joining them as a member. However, I have ordered extra copies so if you would like a free copy of the magazine from ESERO-UK then please contact us. First come first served!! Finally thanks to all my authors and the ASE production team.

Please add your comments and thoughts to this blog.

Allan
