STEM Cohesion Conference 2011

Last week welcomed the third annual STEM Cohesion Conference to the National STEM Centre in York. This event brings together colleagues from several organisations working to support STEM education, offering an opportunity to reflect on how through collaboration we can provide better support for schools and colleges.

Speaking at the conference, Jo Hutchinson, Deputy Director at the International Centre for Guidance Studies, highlighted for us the importance of informed careers information, advice and guidance in helping young people to appreciate the range of opportunities offered to them through STEM study. Later in the day Peter Mitchell, CEO of the Baker Dearing Educational Trust, described the vision and future plans for University Technical Colleges. Peter's keynote brought into sharp relief the importance of providing appropriate pathways to prepare students for highly-skilled technical careers.

Our thanks to colleagues who contributed to this successful event, including ACME, Further Maths Support Programme, HE STEM Programme, LSIS STEM Support, National network of Science Learning Centres, NCETM, and STEMNET. We look forward to welcoming you back in 2012.

Colleagues who attended the conference may access all presentations from the online Community group - STEM Cohesion Conference. The conference report will be posted to the group in the new year.

Best wishes for a peaceful festive season.
