I helped out at the Open Day of the National STEM Centre and the National Science Learning Centre. There was a Christmas wiz-bang lecture by Dr Steve Rossington, demonstrations to amaze your family at the Christmas dinner table by our very own Simon Quinnell and a chance to explore, and play with the gadgets, in the National STEM Centre.
With three of us on duty supervising the STEM Centre I thought… Read more

Cansats in the snow
Posted by Tom Lyons on 11th December 2012
I awoke on Friday morning to a blanket of snow, and in the hotel next door, so did colleagues from Romania, Italy, Denmark, Scotland, Portugal, Germany, Poland...I’ve probably forgotten some. We were all staying in Nordwijk, in the Netherlands, for a two-day Cansat workshop, at the European Space Agency (ESA).
Cansats are pretty much what it says on the tin. In fact, they are satellites in… Read more

Outstanding Mathematics
Posted by Steve Lyon on 22nd November 2012
I once had an email asking whether a student had any outstanding work. When he did give his work in it was always very good, some was outstanding. However, he only did homework he found interesting and of some value, ignoring homework he felt was trivial and boring. I had gaps in my mark book against his name. He had some outstanding work.
I recently read OFSTED’s new subject-specific criteria… Read more
