The following is posted on behalf of Robbie Best:

I met many of you at the recent Organisational STEM Leadership Development Day in York. I was impressed by the amount of knowledge displayed by the various practitioners and to that end wondered if any of you could offer any advice? Do any of you have any preference to which exam board to use for Functional Skills English and Maths tests? Do you find any better than the others?

We hosted a CPD event in collaboration with the Eastern Science Learning Centre last Friday and the activities related to many aspects of the real world including medicine (using urease instead of conventional treatment for ulcers) and pollen for forensics.  The feedback was excellent and the participants could see how they could link all the activities into their teaching. Not just biology staff were present and they could see how it related to their particuar

    Hi All,

Last summer we ran a Forensic Science day - How to use a crime scene to teach practical forensic science at levels 2 & 3.

The resources the course leaders created are available from the link below:

    Hello Dave,

I can't access these resources on that link. Is it possible to add the files to this discussion? If you can't do this can you perhaps email them to myself or to Nigel Edwards and we will upload them for you.

    Thanks,

Recently worked with BloodhoundSSC education team at primary school event and now booked for South East STEM Conference on 15th March at East Malling Conference Centre. Brilliant website, video content and resources. You can't put a 1000mph car in a wind tunnel - some very interesting and leading edge modelling around wind turbulence and 'hot spots'!

    Hi Heather,

We had a similar event at our STEM conference which involved mathematics educators working together with engineering educators. Such that the event gave mathematics teachers the opportunity to teach maths in an engineering context while the engineers developed their teaching and learning skills in mathematics.

  • Equipping New Science Labs(3 replies)

    Created on 03rd February 2012 11:21 by nigel.edwards

On behalf of Heather Aspinwall at Wirral Met College

Here at Wirral Met we are about to move to one site and will be refurbishing  our existing science labs and equipping new ones. I know a number of my colleagues in colleges in the North West are going through similar transitions. I also know that some of you out there have already got brand new labs. This is an appeal for help, what are your tips, pitfalls to avoid, sources of help, fascinating stories….. about

Elaine replied 80 days ago :

    Hi Heather

My physics lab is merging with a materials lab in one building and all of the rest of science is moving into new labs in another.

We have gone for central 'pods' for physics and the applied science lab and linear benches - with gaps down the middle - for the other chemistry and biology/microbiology.

For physics we had a reasonable amount of time to plan what was need needed and what equipment needed to be on benches but for the others it had to be done very quickly.  In both cases by getting staff together to say what they would like - but to be realistic in terms of money - has resulted in labs that everyone seems pleased about.  We asked for storage to mathc what we had - but we are using the opportunity to dispose of anything that looks out of date - last time we did this a company picked it up for the third world.

However we do not move in to physics until September and the rest the following year so we shall see!

Happy to share teh plans with you.

In anticipation of the Yorks & Humbs STEM Maths network meeting, on 1st February at Doncaster College, I have loaded the 80-page introductory manual for GeoGebra 4.0 which is the latest version of the internationally acclaimed free-to-use geometry, algebra, graphing and spreadsheet program. We are planning to whet the attendees appetite for learning more about this brilliant software by having a session using the interactive whiteboard with GeoGebra.

The National Centre for Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (NCETM) held its first online seminar about Calculation last night.  The online seminars are synchronous – all those attending (and there is a waiting list for these now), log on at a certain time and then we can have live discussions, share presentations, move into small group discussions in online breakout rooms and such like.

    Hi all

Is there a plan to repeat the online seminar on Calculation? - teaching calculation is a big issue with maths teachers in FE - we are often trying to adress longstanding misconceptions about calculation with learners at all levels. We were talking about this at the North West Mathematics Network yesterday. One of things we plan to do at the next network is look at the resources from the NCETM Microsite linked to the online discussion. The microsite is "Teaching Calculation: A guide to some key resources "

Having only recently discovered the resources available through the STEM eLibrary, I was surprised to see how extensive the collection was.  The problem with this is as with all internet based resources is that it becomes very hard to filter what is useful to me and then to organise the useful resources in any way.

Thanks for the reply. Yes,  the STEM planner that was demonstrated at York. Great that the STEM planner for FE is nearly ready but I also thought that there is a STEM planner which was  aimed at secondary schools.  Do you know whereabouts the latter is located?
