Articles for Post-16 Students

Subject(s): Biology | Age: Post 16 | Publication Year: 2010 to date

In this cluster of articles, students investigate aspects of plant biology and behaviour including chloroplast genes and how they have helped biologists understand plant evolution; how plants monitor the intensity, direction, colour and duration of the light they receive and if attacked by herbivores or pathogens how plants respond by synthesising additional physical and chemical defences and so increasing their resistance to subsequent assaults.

The resources include an article and teachers' notes.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.

Green Genes – DNA Inside Chloroplasts

One of a series of articles for post-16 students published by Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS). Chloroplasts evolved from photosynthetic bacteria and contain DNA encoding a remnant of their original bacterial genes. This booklet discusses how the study of chloroplast genes has helped biologists understand plant evolution,…

Plants Fight Back - Physical and Chemical Defences in Plants

One of a series of articles for post-16 students published by Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS). Plants attacked by herbivores or pathogens respond by synthesising additional physical and chemical defences and so increasing their resistance to subsequent assaults. The induced defences are initiated close to the damaged site but…

Seeing Without Eyes - Plants, Photoreceptors and Gene Expression

One of a series of articles for post-16 students published by Science and Plants for Schools (SAPS). Plants monitor the intensity, direction, colour and duration of the light they receive and use this information to adapt their growth and metabolism to their particular environment. Most plant responses to light require changes in…
