Three of these booklets, Reasoning about numbers, Shape activities and Calculator activities were produced for schools that were taking part in the National Numeracy Strategy before it was launched nationwide for all schools. They all contained ideas and activities that supplemented the number-heavy curriculum being trialled at the time.

The Mathematical Challenges for Able Pupils book supplemented the National Literacy and Numeracy Strategies: guidance on teaching able children, published in January 2000. Its purpose was to help primary teachers cater for students who were more able in mathematics and likely to exceed the expected standards for their year group.
