Guidance Papers
This set of materials, from the Primary National Strategy, arose through the renewal of the Primary Framework for mathematics. The renewal provided an opportunity to take a fresh look at the overall structure of the primary curriculum for mathematics.
This resulted in a reorganisation of the objectives, now structured into seven core areas of learning in mathematics or broad strands. These strands help to identify key aspects of mathematics that inform teaching and learning. They relate directly to the 1999 Framework for teaching mathematics from Reception to Year Six and the 2000 National Curriculum programmes of study.
The renewal of the Framework also allowed a fresh look to be taken of some of the key areas of mathematics, Using and applying, Calculation, Using calculators and Mental work, each of which is addressed in the relevant guidance paper.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
