This collection contains a range of resources produced by organisations such as the Royal Academy of Engineering and with the support of industrial partners including npower, Thales and Laing O'Rourke. Each of the resources helps to look at aspects of engineering in real-life contexts. Materials will be useful for supporting learners in preparation for the Advanced Diploma in Engineering and also advanced level mathematics.

Just some of the topics include:
• Monitoring vibration levels in a steam turbine
• Aircraft navigation
• Mathematics of simple beam deflection in bridges and buildings

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.

Monitoring Vibration Levels in Steam Turbines. An engineering activity sheet resource
PDF document

Monitoring Vibration Levels in Steam Turbines

This resource, from Mathematics for Engineering Exemplars, shows the application of mathematics within the mechanical and electrical engineering power industry. Here students learn how statistical models are used to set alarms which detect changes in vibration above normal values. The alarms highlight that something is changing and…

The Mathematics of Aircraft Navigation

This resource, from Mathematics for Engineering Exemplars, shows the application of mathematics within the aeronautical industry. Students are given a scenario which involves the recovery of stranded mountaineers by a rescue helicopter and the considerations required for a successful outcome. Trigonometry, formula transposition and…

The Mathematics of Simple Beam Deflection. An engineering activity sheet resource
PDF document

The Mathematics of Simple Beam Deflection

This resource, from Mathematics for Engineering Exemplars, shows the application of mathematics within a civil engineering environment. Here students apply standard deflection formulae to solve some typical beam deflection design problems. These formulae form the basis of the calculations that would be undertaken in real life for…

Wind Power. A science teacher guidance resource
PDF document

Wind Power

This booklet is part of the ‘Innovations in Practical Work’ series published by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme (SEP). One of the most important questions facing us all is how we will use the planet’s energy resources over the coming decades. Many people believe that wind power can make a vital contribution.…
