Produced by the Shell Education Service, these resources are aimed at parents and young children to encourage them to try science investigations at home. The investigations are equally suitable for the primary classroom. Each investigation covers some suggested factors which can be investigated, as well as any safety implications. The worksheets set out a recommended set of questions to be considered when carrying out the investigation.

Activate 1 contains investigations that cover:
• Rocket science - forces and movement
• Paddle boat - forces and movement
• Rolling cans - forces and movement
• Fizzy drinks - changing materials
• Kitchen orchestra - sound
• Watching paint dry - changing materials
• Flower power - plant growth
• Tallest tower - forces
• Acid test - acids and alkalis
• Colour writing - separating mixtures (chromatography)

Activate 2 includes:
• Whoosh - irreversible change
• Sparkling pennies - acids and change
• Rolling cans - forces and movement
• Finding fats - food types
• Will it float? - floating and sinking
• Loop the loop - forces and motion
• Cartesian diver - floating and sinking
• Watch it grow - evaporation, crystallisation and separating materials

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
