Gold Award: Triathlon
The British Science Association CREST Awards encourage students to take an investigative approach to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related projects. These resources are just a few ideas that could be used to help students gain an award.
These materials look at three possible projects that relate to the sports equipment a triathlete may use:
• Communications project - students act as members of a research team that develops prosthetic limbs and running shoes. Funding for this work is required. Students devise an approach to suitable potential donors.
• Practical project - students undertake practical experiments to investigate how running shoes can reduce strain injuries caused by running on hard surfaces and how running shoes can improve the energy efficiency of running.
• Research project - students research how prosthetic limbs are designed and built to mimic a natural limb as closely as possible and the human factors that limit the type of artificial limb possible for an amputee.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
