FAQs
- What is the National STEM Centre?
-
The National STEM Centre was established through funding from the Gatsby Charitable Foundation as a result of recommendations from the 2006 STEM Programme Report. You may find out more about the Centre’s objectives and activity in the 'About us' section of this website.
At the heart of the National STEM Centre is our purpose built physical library, housing extensive collections of support materials for teachers and lecturers. The collections are available for visitors to view onsite, and selected collections are available online through our eLibrary.
The National STEM Centre leads the government's STEM Programme, bringing together business, industry, charitable organisations, professional bodies and others with an interest in STEM education to facilitate closer collaboration and more effective support for schools and colleges.
As part of our STEM Programme work the Centre offers facilities to support the work of partner organisations (our 'STEM Associates').
- May I visit the National STEM Centre?

Yes. Teachers, lecturers and STEM organisations are welcome to visit the National STEM Centre physical resource collections throughout the year. You may arrange a visit by contacting us, but please give us at least 24 hours' notice. A member of the team will contact you to make arrangements for your visit.

- How can I provide feedback?
-
We appreciate feedback on the National STEM Centre website and eLibrary. Please contact us with your suggestions for improving our service.
- Do I need to register to access resources in the eLibrary?
-
The majority of resource collections in the eLibrary do not require you to sign in to the site.
However, there are some collections that are available only to registered users of the eLibrary. This enables us to record how popular particular resources are, and provide more detailed feedback to resource providers. Also, you will not be able to download video from the eLibrary unless you are logged in.
There are other benefits to registering and logging in with the eLibrary. For example, on your 'my dashboard' page you will receive bespoke suggestions of resources that you may find interesting, for example, when new materials are added to the eLibrary. Registered users are also able to share their expertise by rating and/or commenting on resources, which helps us to improve the eLibrary service.
Registering with the website is straightforward. Once you have registered simply select ‘Sign in’ from the very top of the webpage and enter your email address and password.
- I'd like to submit a resource review to the eLibrary...
-
Any registered user of the eLibrary may rate and comment on a resource. We are also working with a group of Teacher Associates who are writing longer reviews of resources they have used in their classroom. If you are interested in working with us on developing the eLibrary we would love to hear from you. Please contact us with 'Teacher Associate' included in the subject line.
- I am a teacher and would like to share my STEM resources with others. May I submit these to the eLibrary?
-
We are currently working on the next phase of development, which will enable members of the National STEM Centre community to share their own resources.
- I'm having problems opening certain files in the eLibrary...
-
Problems with viewing certain media files may be due to the particular browser versions. If you are using Internet Explorer you may wish to try using a different browser instead, such as Firefox: www.mozilla.org/firefox. If you are using Windows 2000 or Windows XP and you are unable to view particular resources, please contact us describing your problem, your feedback is very useful in helping us to improve the eLibrary service.
- My organisation would like to submit resources to the eLibrary...
-
The National STEM Centre is committed to helping resource providers disseminate their STEM resource materials to teachers and lecturers. Please contact us if you would like to discuss building a collection in the eLibrary.
- What copyright restrictions apply to resources in the eLibrary?
-
Copyright for the resources within the eLibrary rests with the providers of the materials. Resource files in the eLibrary are covered by specific copyright information, which can be found by following the link beside each resource file. Full details of copyright restrictions are available in our Terms & Conditions.
- I'd like to share my experience of using a resource on the eLibrary. How can I do this?
-
Contributions from colleagues using the eLibrary and the online community add real value for others searching for resources. In the eLibrary teachers rate resources and comment on how they have used them in the classroom. In the online community teachers keep up to date with a wealth of great teaching ideas and share suggestions, ideas and resources.
As a thank you for invaluable contributions to the National STEM Centre website we award a £25 gift voucher to our top contributor each month. Regular contributors will also be highlighted with a badge in their community profile.
