Mathematical Education on Merseyside (Challenges)
Mathematical Education on Merseyside (MEM) is an umbrella organisation, bringing together staff from the three universities in Liverpool and local school teachers. They provide activities such as masterclasses to enrich the mathematical experience of high-school students throughout the region and, as available here, challenges which originally were presented as take-home competitions for use during the February half terms.
There are two Challenges, one aimed at Year Seven and Eight students, and the Senior Challenge which was aimed at Year Nine and Ten students. Each challenge contains about eight questions covering a wide range of mathematics set within a problem solving or puzzle activity.
The Senior Challenges from 1980 to 2003 are presented in one file with a matching file of solutions. From 2003 onwards there are separate files and solutions for each year to the present.
The Challenges are usually set in a particular context or theme, such as Space or Cluedo.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
