Shape Games for Students Aged 11-13
Published by BEAM, these games provide opportunities for students to apply their knowledge of shape and space.
The games, all taken from the Maths of the month series, and their mathematical content are:
• Angle estimation game - estimating and measuring angles
• Isosceles triangle game - playing against a partner to complete triangles
• Mirror images - making a mirror image of a partner's pattern
• Square pattern - identifying and finding shapes within a pattern.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.

Commentary: This review is focusing mainly on the “angle estimation” file. It requires pupils to work in pairs, draw angles without a protractor, estimate the size, then measure the angle in order to check accuracy. Points are awarded based on how close the estimate is to the actual size. I find that pupils at KS4 still struggle with using a protractor and sense-checking their answers e.g. giving an answer of 140 degrees for an acute angle etc. This resource engaged pupils from the start by adding in the element of competition, and kept their focus throughout. When looking through the other files I found the “isosceles triangles game” a little too confusing for the pupils, the “mirror images” file is a good activity for reflection, and the “square pattern” file seemed very versatile (for example could use for a starter or as a basic problem solving activity).
