These Cre8ate maths activities demand logical and multi-stage thinking. This topic also supports the development of personal, learning and thinking skills.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.

Activity time: 40 minutes (15 mins first task, 25 mins second task).
Level / prior knowledge: level 4+
Subject / curriculum links / skills: logical thinking, problem solving, listening skills.
Preparation time: 1 hour cutting and laminating if you wish to re-use OR pupils to cut out.
Extra resources: printing the resources double sized recommended.
Commentary:
I used the resources with a bottom set year 9 group to try to encourage better listening skills. The short task “Fill the Bus” worked extremely well, if anything it was completed much quicker than anticipated by some groups – there is more than one solution so extend it by asking for another solution.
“Bed and Board” was more involved and most groups had to resort to laying out the cards and viewing them together. This task would be more suitable for a more able group.
Most pupils enjoyed the tasks particularly “Fill the Bus” but many of them didn’t think they were doing maths.
I now use “Fill the Bus” as a starter combined with other Functional Skills tasks, as a standalone task I would rate this 5 out of 5.
“Bed and Board” didn’t work as well but is worth a look.
