Properties of Shape Mystery
This resource written by Shirley Fall has fifteen cards each with a statement about 2-D shapes and how they lie on a 3 by 3 grid. The rationale is for students to discuss the possible options and work towards a solution of which 2-D shape lies in each of the grid cells. Extension questions are also posed.
The file named 2-D Shape cards has a grid with a solution to the mystery and also six additional cards with rogue shapes. The cards can be used as support materials, either by giving just the correct cards or the additional cards too. This allows for differing levels of support depending on the ability of the students.
A blank 3 by 3 grid is available as separate file and it is recommended to enlarge this to A3 size.
The mathematics students will need:
Lines of symmetry;
Centres of rotation;
Properties of quadrilaterals;
Teachers' notes including some solutions are in the background information for this collection.

Level / prior knowledge: Properties of shapes (up to 6-side polygons), including Rotational Symmetry, Symmetry, vertices, right angles.

Preparation time: Medium, a PPT/Notebook would be helpful to display any clues or a solution.
Extra resources: Paper, rulers.
Commentary: A good resource that worked very well as a collaborative task for higher ability pupils in year 7. There are many ways that this can be used in order to turn it into an excellent resource however; giving each pupil in a group a subset of the cards, which only they are allowed to see can encourage all member of the group to take part and work together, or having pupils assume roles (like leader/checker/scribe/resource manager etc) allows pupils to develop in certain specific areas while working together. Most pupils will also discover little facts (circles have an infinite number of lines of symmetry) that raise general levels of understanding of shape.
