Attracting the Customer
This set of Cre8ate maths activities explores three ways in which retailers and product manufacturers may seek to persuade customers to either buy more of their product or encourage customer loyalty.
In ‘Prize draw’ students explore sequences and series. ‘Offers’ involves money calculations and comparison of prices. In ‘Collect the set’ students run and devise simulations, find mean and range and discuss these and the probabilities of events.

Commentary:
Pupils are never more engaged than when they are surprised by something that contradicts what they thought was obvious. The “prize draw” resource does exactly this. Pupils are presented with 4 different prizes to pick from. I ask pupils to very quickly (so they must rely on intuition rather than calculation) decide on which prize they would choose. Of course very rarely does anyone pick the correct answer because to them it is so obviously wrong. Then I ask them to calculate each one, which just requires some competent column addition or the use of a calculator, and watch their poor little puzzled faces as they realise that there is something surprising happening. This is a good introduction to geometric sequences and I will often follow it up with a few more examples such as “how much pocket money would you get in one month if you got 1p on the first day and double every day thereafter?”
