Healthy Childhood
In this resource from Cre8ate maths students have the opportunity to work with complex charts, used by professionals who monitor the physical development of children.
The activities, for students to undertake, include tasks such as plotting data onto charts and reading information from charts, then matching the data with written statements. The complexity of the charts will prompt discussion and promote analytical thinking.

Commentary: This was done over 2 lessons, taking 2 hours. The first task - Keeping track was the hardest. The pupils had to plot 4 different graphs, onto two charts. The difficulty was the complexity of the axes on the charts. The pupils had to be careful to check whether they were given inches or cm and then use the correct vertical scale, the same happened with the weight scale. I stopped the pupils after a few minutes and made them focus on getting one set of data plotted before moving onto the next. The 'True or False' activity and the 'Who is it?' activity were both easier and the pupils presented their work as posters, ready for display. I made sure the pupils justified their answers, giving reasoning for all their decisions. At the end of the two sessions the pupils told me that they had enjoyed this style of lesson -all the tasks were done in pairs, with lots of discussion between themselves.
