Speed of Sound
In this experiment, from BLOODHOUND SSC, students discover how easy it is to measure the speed of sound and increase their knowledge of acoustics, using microphones and free audio software (Audacity). The experiment takes into account differing temperatures, pressures and humidities.
This resource includes a short history of the measurement of sound and an explanation of the Mach number - the ratio of the speed of the object to the speed of sound at that point.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
