How Plants Grow

In this topic from the Association for Science Education, students study the life cycles of plants and the adaptation of plants to different environments. The topic allows classes in schools across the world to exchange information about plant cultivation.

The topic provides a context for studying plant biology which leads to an exploration of the conditions needed for plant crops to grow well. Students are introduced to management strategies for growing plants by looking at different approaches to pest control, cropping systems and propagation methods, and plant breeding (from traditional methods to genetic modification).

After exchanging their findings and views with students in other countries, students compare and discuss the responses received from classes in other parts of the world.

This topic fits well into the biology curriculum. It links closely to sustainable development education and citizenship. In most countries it is suitable for students aged 12–16. It is only available in English.
