This topic, from the Association for Science Education, is designed to allow classes in schools across the world to explore and exchange information about common diseases, their treatment and the importance of lifestyle in determining good health.

This topic illustrates the following fundamental themes:
• awareness of common diseases and diseases caused by lifestyle
• aspects of health care and health awareness in different countries.

As they study this topic, students have the opportunity to make surveys of the use and costs of home medicines as well as sick days taken off from school. They can collect data about their fitness and gather information about the extent to which people take exercise. They can also discuss ways to improve health.

After exchanging their findings and views with students in other countries, students compare and discuss the responses received from classes in other parts of the world.

This topic is suitable for studies in biology, health education, home economics and general science as well as languages. In most countries it is suitable for students aged 12-16. This topic was included in the resources published as part of ASE Science Year CD called Who am I? .

This topic is available in English, German, Italian, Portuguese, Spanish, Bulgarian, Arabic and Ukrainian.

There are still schools making active use of Science Across the World topics and exchanging ideas and information. For details visit the Science Across the World pages of the ASE web site.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
