ICT in Practical Science: New Approaches to Data Collection and Analysis
These resources were developed by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme and the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University in order to demonstrate new ways that ICT can be used to enhance practical work in science. Research scientists use computer technology in both the collection and the analysis of first-hand data. The booklet sets out to present a justification for using ICT in practical work, exemplifying this with some innovative classroom ideas. The activities introduce a range of different ways of using equipment such as sensors, audio and video recorders, and available (often free) software to collect and analyse a wide variety of data.
There is a range of topics covered by the activities across biology, physics and chemistry: audio, combustion, electrosmog, exercise, habitats, indicators, parachutes, photosynthesis, pollution, rockets, trainers and tropism.
In addition to the booklet, there are two downloadable zip files each containing three videos which are suitable for analysis with Tracker software:
• Indicators (beetroot, onion, spinach)
• Trainers (sprinter wearing trainers, sprinter wearing socks, sprinter with bare feet).
