In celebration of its founder, Fritz Schumacher’s centenary year Practical Action have created Small Is...Challenge. Schumacher’s philosophy was based on the idea that even a small change can have a big impact on people’s lives. The challenge for students is to look at technologies from the last 100 years and invent a product that could contribute towards a more sustainable future. The activity is best conducted in groups of four students.

The resource consists of:
• A two metre long full colour technology timeline provides a great starting point for a display of students' work.
• A presentation outlining student activities.
• Activity sheet where students can record the progress of their research and develop their ideas of technology for their future.

Practical Action has set up a competition based on this activity (closing date for entries is 30th April 2011). Teachers can email Practical Action (education@practicalaction.org.uk) for a free printed copy of the timeline. Further information can be found on the Practical Action's website.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
