Transforming Shapes SS7
In this DfE Standards Unit resource, students learn to recognise and visualise transformations of 2D shapes and translate, rotate, reflect and combine these transformations. Students unfamiliar with the terms ‘rotation’, ‘reflection’ and ‘translation’ will need some introduction to these. The session also assumes some acquaintance with equations of lines of reflection,
e.g. y = 4, x = 4, y = x, y = –x. It is not essential, however, that all learners understand these ideas fully at the outset; during the session they will learn from each other through discussion. (GCSE Grades D-F)
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.

Activity time: 1 hour (I did as an extension task 20 mins)
Level / prior knowledge: Level 5/6/, transformations, rotation, reflection and transformation.
Subject / curriculum links / skills: Shape (types of transformations).
Preparation time: 10 mins - making smartboard for the lesson, looking over the lesson, copying handouts.
Extra resources: Smartboard file, scissors for pupils to cut out sorting cards.
Commentary:
I used this resource with a middle and bottom set year 9 as an extension activity at the end of a series of lessons on transformations. I did not follow the lesson plan given, I just used the group work activity near the end of the lesson to recap and extend knowledge.
I really liked giving out one set of easier cards for the groups to link together, then as an extension the next set. The next set involved using the same ideas but pupils had to write their own to link the cards. I did not do much discussion about what the groups had done, but it can easily be assessed and discussed as a whole class.
Pupils responded positively to the activity. Pupils benefitted from working together in a group for this activity.
