Badger Maths Problem Solving
This sample of Badger Maths Problem Solving, includes skills and strategies for practical problem solving in Years One to Six.
The series supports the NNS objectives, teaching both skills and strategies for problem solving. It also provides plenty of vital practice.
Each resource contains an example of a four-step approach for a problem solving strategy and task cards split into levels.

Activity time: 1 hour
Level / prior knowledge: Levels 2-3. Addition and subtraction (for these specific problems)
Subject / curriculum links / skills: Maths – problem solving, using and applying addition and subtraction, mental strategies.
Preparation time: 10 mins (To photocopy and cut the task cards)
Extra resources: Created a Smart Notebook File to talk the children through the problem solving process and a worksheet with other examples on but this wasn’t essential
Commentary
This resource was fantastic for breaking down a problem into a step-by-step process. The 4-step strategy and being able to draw a picture/diagram really assisted the children in visualising and tackling an otherwise ‘wordy’ problem.
The sample task cards provided in this resource are all aimed at those children making ‘expected progress’ at year 3 but a differentiated set of task cards are available when the full resource is purchased and there are explicit links made between each problem and other areas of the Numeracy Framework. I’m desperate to order the full resource for use within the classroom – super ideas for making problem solving easier and fun!
