Dry Ice Demonstration
In this National Science Learning Centre video, Simon Quinnell demonstrates an experiment using solid carbon dioxide (dry ice) and sodium hydroxide which is likely to impress students. The experiment can be used to talk about the properties of solids, liquids and gases, acids and alkalis or used as an open evening demonstration. The clip shows how solid carbon dioxide sublimes into gaseous carbon dioxide.
The video is accompanied by an information sheet which summarises the requirements, procedure and scientific background to the experiment.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
