Science for Ages Five to Sixteen 1991
Following the establishment of the 1989 National Curriculum (NC) for science, the Secretary of State for Education and Science made proposals regarding the revision of Attainment Targets (AT) for science. The key ideas included proposal of:
• Five attainment targets
- AT1 - Scientific investigation
- AT2 - Life and living processes
- AT3 - Earth and environment
- AT4 - Materials and their behaviour
- AT5 - Energy and its effects
• A reduction in the number of statements of attainment in science
• Weighting of attainment targets: Exploration of science (AT1)
- 50% at Key Stage One
- 45% at Key Stage Two
- 35% at Key Stage Three
- 30% at Key Stage Four
• Knowledge and understanding of science (ATs 2-17)
- 50% at Key Stage One
- 55% at Key Stage Two
- 65% at Key Stage Three
- 70% at Key Stage Four
Components
Along with the overview of the proposals themselves, the document lays out what a new NC would look like under these proposals, under sections entitled:
• Attainment targets for Key Stages One to Three and Key Stage Four Model A
• Attainment targets for Key Stage Four Model B
• Programmes of study for Key Stages One to Three and Model A of Key Stage Four
• Programmes of study for Model B of Key Stage Four
