Nuffield Pathways Through Science was reorganised to match the new NEAB Modular Science specifications following the 1995 revisions to the National Curriculum. Much of the content of the programme was unchanged but the modules were cut to 12 and the materials restructured.

The revisions of the National Curriculum were more than just a rationalisation and slimming down exercise. The model for progression was changed in a way which was very significant for Pathways users. The previous approach was essentially based on mastery so that students did not move to a higher level until they had come to terms with work at a lower level. Content was assigned to levels so that at Key stage 4, students working at lower level were expected to revisit topics studied at Key stage 3. In the new curriculum the programme of study which is more or less common to all. This meant that differentiation was then to be based on the depth of treatment of a common programme. Just a few topics were reserved for students preparing for higher tier GCSE papers.

The Upgrade Pack included new Study Guides to match the 12 revised modules together with supplementary activities and related guidance for teachers.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
