Structures and Forces, Stage Three
The Science 5/13 unit Structures and forces stage three continues to study of structures and forces met in children’s daily experience as in Structures and Forces Stages One and Two. However, in stages one and two the forces met were always balanced and the structures in which they acted did not move. The stage three unit deals with forces which make things move as well at taking further the study of static forces.
As in the stages one and two unit on this topic, the author discussed concepts involved, providing information for the teacher and suggests questions for investigation which illustrate the concept. It is left to the teacher to select and manage the children’s activities.
Forces moving things – concerning concepts such as power, energy, work, gravity, inertia, acceleration, viscosity
Mostly about tensions – concerning tensions and compressions, springs, surface tension, capillarity, structures and patterns

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
