This Association for Science Education (ASE) publication about the industrial use of micro-organisms was developed in association with Nipa Laboratories Ltd. At the time, the company was recognised throughout the world as a specialist in the production of microbiocides for use as preservatives and antioxidants, particularly in the pharmaceutical, cosmetic and food industries.

The booklet contained guidance for teachers and notes for students. It included activities suitable for both students aged 14 to 16 (O-level work) and for students aged 16 to 19 (A-level work).
