Pit Stop
The Pit stop activities from Cre8ate maths are designed to motivate students to investigate the performance of model solar cars through a series of racing challenges. To do this activity you will need a set of model solar racing cars which are often shared between design technology and science departments.
Students first work in teams to assemble and time the cars on the flat, then up and down a gradient. Five time trials are conducted for each test surface and the average speed is calculated then used to produce distance time graphs for different race tracks.
Modification of the basic car is the focus of Hill climb, where teams consider relevant factors which may enhance the performance of their vehicle.
In Formula 8 students modify their cars for increased speed and an assessment of their car’s speed is made on the test track before team cars are raced on the Formula 8 race track.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
