Cre8 Salon
This Cre8ate maths activity draws on research which has indicated that many trainees / school leavers who are employed in vocational positions struggle with the numeracy skills needed in the workplace.
Cre8 salon is a series of flexible activities that are designed to simulate some of the challenges of work in the context of a beauty salon. Mathematical connections involve logical thinking.

Commentary: Excellent functional skills resource. Quick and easy to prepare, it just requires the worksheets attached. I used the resource with my year 9 middle ability group who thoroughly enjoyed the task (especially the girls in the group). Pupils worked in pairs to organise a feasible booking sheet for the salon customers. I extended the task by asking pupils which treatment they would have at the salon and asked them to work out the cost and to write their appointments on the booking sheet. It was easy to manage the lesson and was very pupil led. There are many extension tasks that can be created allowing higher ability pupils to be stretched. The resource led to some of the girls in my class thinking about a future career in beauty.
