This chapter in the booklet Relevant and Engaging Statistics and Data Handling from the Royal Statistical Society Centre for Statistical Education (RSSCSE) describes how to plan an investigation by outlining the main steps a student should go take when doing an investigation: planning, collecting, processing, discussing and finally evaluating.

An example of a planning sheet that students could use to help them is given, followed by examples of possible investigations using the CensusAtSchool and ExperimentsAtSchool Databases.

A few of these examples are discussed in greater depth with details of which variables would need to be selected from the databases and possible forms of presentation that might be useful.
