Produced by FootageVault, using original NASA video, these clips show developments in early space suit design.

The clips show how suits were tested for mobility and shows details of the joints that needed to be both flexible and airtight. They can be used to illustrate how engineers tackled the problems of making a space suit that was airtight, could withstand the extremes of space and also be flexible enough for astronauts to perform elementary tasks. They help to illustrate the application of science, technology and materials science.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
