Silver Award: Squeaky Clean
The British Science Association CREST Awards encourage students to take an investigative approach to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) related projects. These resources are just a few ideas that could be used to help students gain an award.
These materials look at three possible projects that relate to cleaning products and tackling microbes that spread disease:
• Communications project - students act as health promotion specialists trying to persuade people about the need to wash hands after using the toilet.
• Practical project - students investigate if hand washing makes hands cleaner and compare the effectiveness of using soap and water with the an alcohol hand gel.
• Research project - research the range of cleaning products on the market, evaluate the effectiveness of methods for infection control and decide if antiseptics have a place in the home.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
