Chemistry Captured: Video Materials for Teachers of Chemistry

This DVD of video clips was produced by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the School of Chemistry, Cardiff University. It offers students the opportunity to view a range of reactions at close range with the ability of pausing and replaying key features. Reactions include the physical preparation of a selection of gases, the reaction of halogens and oxygen with elements of the third period, and the hydrolysis of the period three halides. The materials are primarily intended for the teaching of A Level students though some of the videos could also be useful for 11-16 year old students.
There are 43 individual video clips and they are grouped as follows:
• Laboratory preparation of gases
• Physical states of chlorine, bromine and iodine
• Reaction of the halogens with elements of the third period
• Reaction of oxygen/air with elements of the third period
• Reaction of the period three halides with water (hydrolysis)
The DVD version of these resources can be purchased from Mindsets.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
