Fractional Distillation
This resource from Defence Dynamics help students to understand the process of fractional distillation in the context of crude oil distillation. In the first activity, students consider the physical properties of different oil fractions. They then compare their boiling ranges and examine the relationship between viscosity and boiling range.
In the second activity, students label a fractional distillation column, looking at uses for each fuel, and consider the relationship between hydrocarbons and their boiling points.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
