Chemistry Captured II: Video Materials for Teachers of Chemistry

This DVD of video clips was produced by the Gatsby Science Enhancement Programme in partnership with the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and the School of Chemistry, Cardiff University. It offers students the opportunity to view a range of reactions at close range with the ability of pausing and replaying key features. The selected reactions illustrate topics such as thermal decomposition, catalysis, photochlorination, chemical equilibria, oxidation, chemiluminescence, allotropy and electrochemistry. The materials are primarily intended for the teaching of A Level students though some of the videos could also be useful for 11-16 year old students.
The video clips are grouped as follows:
• Thermal decomposition
• Endothermic reactions
• Catalysis
• Photochlorination
• Equilibria
• Rusting of steel
• Oxidation reaction
• The ‘Barking Dog’ (chemiluminescence)
• Displacement reaction
• Diffusion
• Allotropes of sulphur
• The hydrogen electrode and the measurement of some electrode potentials
The DVD version of these resources can be purchased from Mindsets.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
