Addition and Subtraction
This selection of spreadsheets, designed by the Primary National Strategies to aid teaching and learning, tackles addition and subtraction in a variety of ways.
Number line counting shows a number line of ten places, numbers between 0 and 99 can be chosen. The numbers on the line can be hidden or revealed.
Counting stick shows a counting stick with eleven numbers, which can be revealed or hidden. The starting number and steps between numbers can be chosen and hidden or revealed. Counting stick further options has the same functions but can be used with visual representations, whole numbers, decimals, percentages, fractions, conversions between mass, length and capacity, and time.
Adding 1 and 2 digit numbers has a four by four grid with generates numbers. Numbers are then selected and the total sum of the numbers can be revealed.
Add and subtract 1, 10, 100, 1000 allows a number to be selected, which can be hidden or revealed, and then 1, 10, 100 or 1000 can be added or taken away by selecting a shape.
Add and subtract number sentences generates two random numbers and then the four possible addition and subtraction sums are shown. There are a variety of options for the sizes of the numbers.
Addition and subtraction missing sign shows either an addition or subtraction sum where all three numbers and the sign can be hidden or revealed.
Addition and subtraction facts shows a four by four addition grid where the numbers are randomly generated and the answers and the numbers can be hidden or revealed.
Addition and subtraction trios and Addition and subtraction flash cards shows a triangle of three numbers with an addition and two subtraction signs between them. Two numbers, which can be chosen between one and a hundred, are added to give the third and therefore this can be subtracted from one original number to give the other. It shows the relationship between addition and subtraction. Any of the numbers can be hidden or revealed. The flash card version includes the four possible calculations on flash cards.
Addition and subtraction pyramids shows an addition pyramid where the numbers can be randomly generated or chosen. The numbers can then all be hidden or revealed.
Complements is a timed activity where the complement of a number has to be found. The level of difficulty of the number and the time allowed can be varied.
Total 20 allows a differentiated approach to complements. There is a choice of two, three or four numbers that total 20, one missing number in each section has to be found. There is an extension sheet where the total is a randomly generated number.
