Algebra Games
This resource from Virtual Maths reinforces the distinction between equations, expressions and formulae. It is an interactive game with three levels where students use keyboard arrows to manipulate a wheelbarrow in which they catch equations, expressions or formulae as a selection of all three drop down the screen.
An explanation and examples of each term to be collected is given at the beginning of each level.

Activity time: Extension (Around 20 Minutes)
Level / prior knowledge: KS4 Foundation/Algebra
Subject / curriculum links / skills:/Algebra
Preparation time: Almost none; simply explain the activity and double click the .swf file.
Extra resources: Ensure a .swf file (flash) does work on the school computer before using it. Put this on your memory stick and then double click the file on the actual computer to be used. This simple, but necessary, test is required.
Commentary: I used this resource for extension for students who had grasped Function Machines quite easily.
This is my introduction to the words Expression, Equation and Formulae and my pupils loved the simplicity of this game. I use it to ensure my pupils understand the difference between the three words. My students moved a cartoon character with a wheelbarrow using the computer's keyboard to catch the correct Expression, Equation or Formulae.
