This resource from the Continuing Mathematics project is made up of three units covering hypothesis testing.

The first unit covers the Wilcoxon Rank Sum Test and aims to teach the use of a non-parametric test for assessing the significance of the difference between two independent samples. In this context, the objectives for this unit are that students will be able to set up a suitable Null Hypothesis, possess an understanding of 'significance' and of 'significance level', use tables of critical values and interpret 'significant' and 'non-significant' values.

The second unit covers the Binomial Test and the objectives for the unit are that students will learn to write down a suitable Null Hypothesis for the symmetrical binomial situation and an Alternative Hypothesis, and be able to distinguish between and utilise one-tailed and two-tailed binomial tests.

The third unit introduces two final tests, namely the Runs Test and the Wilcoxon Matched Pairs Test with objectives that students will be able to use the Wilcoxon Matched Pairs test and the Runs test where appropriate, learn to distinguish between matched and independent samples, and gain some confidence and ability in hypothesis testing generally from the practice gained in using a variety of statistical examples.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
