This book was one in the Longman Physics Topics series. It was written to provide background material for the work on ideas in cosmology in the fifth year of the Nuffield Physics course. This historical reader traces the development of ideas about the Universe from early times to Galileo while touching on the origins of other important explanatory ideas. The book includes two quotations from translations of Galileo’s writings.

Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
