Green Chlorine
Produced by CIEC Promoting Science, these materials help students understand the underlying principles of electrolysis and how this process is used in the manufacture of chlorine from brine (salt solution). Students see how the technology has developed and changed the efficiency of the process.
Students also look at a risk benefit analysis of the chlorine industry. Students are presented with several simplified situations in which they make use of data sheets, their own experience and, if available, other source material to determine which uses of chlorine are most valuable to society. They may conclude that some aspects of the industry should only continue with additional controls imposed upon them. The aim is to give the students an assessment tool which they can use to evaluate industrial practices and the views of critics.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
