Kitchen Concoctions
CIEC Promoting Science resources put curriculum science in real-life contexts. These materials focus on the use of mixtures in the kitchen and can be used to illustrate the properties of materials.
Students examine a mince-pie as a 'mixture' and compare 'real' dairy cream with imitation aerosol cream.
A wide range of activities, that look at the properties of materials and their uses include:
• Making a soap bar
• Developing a bubble mixture
• Investigating the effectiveness of washing products and scourers
• Making a simple fire extinguisher.
Extensive teacher guidance, presentations and children's activity sheets are included.
HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
