Medical Emergencies
Medical Emergencies, from the Centre for Science Education, is a set of teaching materials which offer a cross-curricular approach to learning about engineering. Students design and make a hanging storage device that could, ideally, be folded up to make a rucksack or other carrying device. They have the opportunity to communicate their findings in a variety of ways and look at how engineers and scientists need to be creative in their work using a range of skills and ideas.
Teachers' notes and the starter activity are included at the start of the file called Medical emergency pack.
Starter activity
• The life-saving rucksack
Technology
• Developing the design
• Writing the specification
• Making the product
Science
• Strength of thread
• Transmittance of light
Mathematics
• Pocket shape and position
• Scale diagrams
Cross-curricular activity

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment.
Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date.
Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work.
Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
