The Bridging Units from SMILE Mathematics provide curriculum continuity for pupils when transferring from primary to secondary school. They are fully cross-referenced to the Framework for Teaching Mathematics.

They facilitate learning through differentiated group activities and by stimulating whole class discussion.

The ideas for the Bridging Units were developed by practising teachers. All materials have been extensively trialled in a wide range of schools including primary, secondary, comprehensive, selective and special schools.

Each Bridging Unit has an overarching theme. However, within each Bridging Unit the two sections (Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3 materials) have been designed so that they can serve as standalone units. This recognises the possibility that not all pupils attempting the secondary section will have completed the primary section (and vice versa).

Teachers' Notes are included for each session and incorporate learning objectives that are taken from the Year 6 and Year 7 Teaching Programmes of the Framework for Teaching Mathematics.

A detailed description of each activity has been divided into three parts corresponding to a 'typical' mathematics lesson:
• Compatible Oral and Mental Starters
• Main Activity
• Plenary

The Main Activity has normally been differentiated at three levels, for pupils working in the Lower, Middle or Higher Groups. At Key Stage 2, the Middle Group materials are suitable for pupils consolidating level 4 and starting level 5. At Key Stage 3, the Middle Group materials are suitable for pupils revising level 4 but working mainly at level 5.

HEALTH and SAFETY
Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
