This is one of a series of extended units, from the Association for Science Education and the Design and Technology Association, to provide in-depth coverage of a topic or an area of the curriculum. This unit was developed by the Centre for Sustainable Energy, which aimed to promote constructive energy education in schools and colleges.

Through their work on this unit, students gain a greater awareness and scientific understanding of global and local environmental issues. They come to appreciate alternative ways of managing natural resources. They gain some understanding of the role of business in environmental issues; They also become more aware of the key factors in 'green building' design.
