This Science upd8 activity engages students in the practical applications of colour mixing used in stage set design. In the scenario students act as the expert making recommendations to an international awards show, the ‘The International Music Awards.’

This resource is based on the work of the British design agency, Universal Everything, who have designed sound and light shows for the MTV awards shows.

In the Limelight presents an APP [Assessing Pupils' Progress] opportunity in science. The activity combines opportunities for AFL [Assessment for Learning] through the teacher led demonstration, followed by one for AOL [Assessment of Learning] in explaining how the glitter towers work. To use the activity in this way requires students to have studied heat energy transfer at an earlier stage in your scheme of work.

Any use of a resource that includes a practical activity must include a risk assessment. Please note that collections may contain ARCHIVE resources, which were developed at a much earlier date. Since that time there have been significant changes in the rules and guidance affecting laboratory practical work. Further information is provided in our Health and Safety guidance.
